HÀ NỘI — The SP2 train, which runs from the northern mountainous Lào Cai Province to Hà Nội, derailed early on Monday at Hà Nội’s Yên Viên station, but there were no casualties.

Phạm Nguyễn Chiến, head of Việt Nam Railway Corporation’s security department, said the train’s 13th and 14th carriages derailed. The train management board evacuated passengers in the derailed carriages to coaches ahead and continued the journey. The train arrived safely at Hà Nội station at 6am, he said.

The incident is expected to delay several other train routes, Chiến said.

The corporation has sent rescue forces to sort out the problem, which will be resolved in the next few hours, he added.

Investigations are on to establish the cause of the derailment. Chiến suspects that it might have occurred because of technical faults. On Sunday morning, the 14th carriage of another SP2 train had also derailed at Yên Viên station. — VNS
