HÀ NỘI — The Hà Nội police on Monday detained a welder who was working at a bakery when the building caught fire, killing eight people most of whom were teens, on Saturday.
Major General Đoàn Duy Khương, city police director, said the name of the welder in question was Kiều Tiến Vinh.
He was detained as the police’s preliminary investigations have shown that the sparks from the welding work at the garret of the workshop hit the Styrofoam ceiling and ignited the fire at about 10.30am on Saturday.
Eight workers at the workshop could not escape in time and were trapped inside the burning house, until the blaze was put out three hours later.
Seven died at the scene, while one succumbed to severe burns at the hospital.
Another two boys suffered serious burns and are being treated at the National Institute of Burns.
Most of the victims were teenagers, with the youngest being 15.
The police have also summoned the owners of the confectionary workshop - a husband and wife - to assist the investigation. The owner was identified as 25-year-old Nguyễn Văn Được from Hà Nội. — VNS
