HÀ NỘI — The authorities in Hà Nội have declared a crackdown on illegal taxis and unsanctioned bus stops, vowing to reclaim the city streets and improve public transportation.
The campaign involves leveraging technology, boosting enforcement and streamlining passenger services.
Traffic cameras will become snitching posts, capturing footage of rogue vehicles that will be slapped with penalties. Passengers seeking legitimate rides can use a new mobile app, 'Hà Nội Interprovincial Passenger Transport App,' to connect them with licensed taxis and buses.
District authorities will be tasked with designating official pick-up and drop-off zones for transportation providers and shutting down unauthorised parking lots to eliminate confusion and potential safety hazards.
But the crackdown does not stop on the streets. The authorities plan to establish a joint inspection team to raid the offices of transportation companies, ensuring they comply with regulations.
Traffic police will also be sharpening their focus. Mỹ Đình Bus Station and its surrounding areas, such as Phạm Hùng and Phạm Văn Đồng Streets, will become a prime target for scooping up illegal operators.
To address the loopholes in existing legislation, a new mechanism specifically designed to combat illegal taxis and unsanctioned bus stops will be proposed as part of the amended Capital Law.
Passengers seeking a more comfortable journey can look forward to a new plan for transferring large groups using licensed contract vehicles and tourist buses. Signage indicating speed limits will also be put up around bus stations to improve traffic flow and safety.
The authorities will also launch public awareness campaigns to educate transportation companies and passengers about regulations.
By combining enforcement muscle with improved services and public education, Hà Nội City hopes to create a transportation system that is safe, efficient and free from the chaos of illegal taxis and unauthorised bus stops. — VNS
