KIÊN GIANG — More than 80 vehicles were spotted releasing wastewater on Highway 80 on the Rạch Giá-Hà Tiên route since the beginning of this year, the southern Kiên Giang Province police said.
Local people said vehicles carrying seafood and ingredients to make fish powder usually released wastewater on the road, especially at night.
The vehicles released water while halting or travelling on the road, causing a foul smell, polluting the environment and posing a health risk to the local people.
The road, flooded with wastewater, is so slippery that many two-wheelers have skidded, causing accidents.
Local authorities are facing difficulties in identifying the violators and imposing punishments due to poor collaboration among the authorised agencies.
The provincial police have ordered the environment police, traffic police and police in districts, towns and cities located along Highway 80 to step up inspections.
Local people living along the highway have been told to report violations to local authorities so that the guilty can be penalised. — VNS
