NGHỆ AN — A fire broke out yesterday in the forest bordering Thanh Chương District’s Thanh Lâm Commune and Nam Đàn District’s Nam Lộc Commune in this central province, destroying several hectares of forest.
Local residents told the Công An Nhân Dân (People’s Police) newspaper that the fire started on a pine-covered hill in Nam Lộc Commune at 11:30am on Sunday. The blaze became uncontrollable and spread to other hills.
Local authorities have mobilised over four hundred people, including police, soldiers, fire-fighters and local residents, to put out the fire.
Hot weather, fuelled by hot winds from Laos, set ablaze the highly flammable pine and acacia forest, making it harder to extinguish the fire.
It took more than 10 hours to get the fire under control, local authorities said, warning that the risk of new flare-ups remains high.
There are currently no statistics available on the losses incurred, but at least 20ha of pine forest, including trees that are over a decade old, have been destroyed. — VNS
