Confectionery fire kills at least one

THANH HÓA — A fire that raged yesterday at Tràng An Việt Nam Confectionery Joint-stock Company in Bắc Sơn Industrial Zone, Thanh Hóa Province, left at least one person dead.

Nguyễn Quang Huy, deputy director of the Thanh Hóa Fire Prevention and Control Police, said that a body was found near a door at 4.15 pm yesterday. The fire started at 8 am. The body was so damaged by the fire that the victim has not yet been identified, Huy said.

The firemen are searching for the two remaining victims trapped in the fire.

The three victims are known to include Dương Thị Ngọc Tâm, 23, and Nguyễn Thị Ngọc Tuyết, both from Bỉm Sơn Town, and Nguyễn Văn Thành of Hoằng Hóa District.

Initial estimates showed losses of nearly VNĐ10 billion (US$444,400).

Several company workers said that the fire started at the confectionery cooking kiln and quickly spread to the material storing area.

The fire has been basically controlled but is still smouldering.

Nearly 1,500sq.m of work space and storage areas were destroyed.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. — VNS
