HÀ NỘI — The Bạch Mai General Hospital started today the construction of a modern health examination and treatment centre, which will cater to patients in Hà Nội and its neighbouring areas.

With an investment of VNĐ664 billion (US$29.5 million) from the State budget and donations from the Petro Vietnam Group and others, the centre will be a 12-storey structure with three  underground levels and a helipad.

The centre will have 120 examination rooms, 650 waiting seats on each floor and can examine up to 6,000 outpatients a day. The 100-bed treatment area will be equipped with advanced medical equipment and will have skilled doctors.

“The centre will be the country’s leading medical centre, which will provide high-tech services to patients as well as train personnel for other hospitals,” said Nguyễn Quốc Anh, director of Bạch Mai Hospital.

Anh said the number of patients visiting Bạch Mai Hospital is expected to rise to 6,000 a day, so the centre will help ease the pressure and improve the quality of medical services at Bạch Mai as well as other hospitals in Hà Nội.

Established in 1911, the 1,900-bed Bạch Mai hospital can provide health checkup and treatment for 3,000 to 3,500 patients daily. The hospital has been struggling to cope with an overwhelming number of patients, especially in specialties such as cancer and tumour, cardiology, psychiatry and gastroenterology. — VNS
