TAOYUAN – Three Vietnamese workers died and another is in a serious condition in hospital after a fire broke out at a warehouse in Taiwan (China).
Two other workers are still not accounted for following the blaze at Kerry TJ Logistics in Taoyuan’s Guanyin District, Taiwan on Thursday.
According to officials, the fire started at 10am on Wednesday and wasn’t completely extinguished until 8pm that day.
Six Vietnamese workers were hired to repair and maintain the air conditioning on the warehouse’s second floor where the blaze started.
Bodies of two victims were found at the scene while the other died in hospital due to serious burns.
According to Thanh niên (Young people) newspaper, the three workers killed were Nguyễn Phi Hùng from Bắc Ninh Province, Tăng Văn Chăm and Nguyễn Văn Hân from Hải Dương Province.
The fourth victim being treated at Taoyuan Hospital is Nguyễn Đức Thịnh from Bắc Ninh Province.
Two other workers in the crew remain missing.
The local authorities said a contractor called ‘Chen’ hired some of the men to do repair and maintenance work.
Five other Vietnamese workers were then recruited by Hùng.
According to Taoyuan Department of Labour, the six Vietnamese workers had come to work in Taiwan legally.
But it appears they had taken other work outside of their original contracts meaning the contractor could face a fine of up to US$24,000. – VNS
