HCM CITY — HCM City People’s Procuracy on Wednesday said it had asked the court to prosecute a Peruvian national for robbery, with assets worth nearly VNĐ6 billion (US$266,000), e-newspaper zing.vn reported.
An investigation showed that Elmer Eduardo Nunez Correa, 44, and a group of friends went to Việt Nam as tourists on August 2014.
From October 2014 to December 2015, Correa and his two accomplices, all Peruvians, conducted four robberies in HCM City, Khánh Hòa and Đồng Nai provinces, mostly at ATMs.
On October 15, 2014, Correa and his gang broke into Maximark supermarket in Tân Bình District, HCM City. They took away jewellery, including diamonds and pearls, and VNĐ32 million in cash from ATM machines.
On February 25, 2015, the group broke an ATM of Agribank Bắc Sài Gòn Branch in District 12, stealing nearly VNĐ1 billion.
Using the same method, they continued to rob VNĐ1.5 billion from two ATMs in the central coastal province of Khánh Hòa in March and nearly VNĐ900 million from an ATM in the southern province of Đồng Nai in December 2015.
