THÁI NGUYÊN — Three babies conceived via in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) in the northern province of Thái Nguyên were born on Sunday, Hospital A’s director Đỗ Minh Thịnh said.
The surgery took about one hour and was performed by Dr Nguyễn Viết Tiến, deputy minister of health, and Thịnh, with assistance from the nursing staff.
The first baby was born to Chu Thị Huyền, a resident of Đại Từ District’s Khôi Kỳ Commune, while Trần Thị Diện from Ký Phú Commune had twins.
This was the first time that a hospital in the province successfully conducted IVF procedures and delivered babies. The IVF procedures were done in March, Thịnh said.
It was a milestone for the hospital staff and would give hopes to thousands of married couples in the region who had been unable to conceive naturally, according to the hospital director.
The hospital’s reproductive support unit was set up last June and was the first for a dozen of northern mountainous provinces that offers assisted reproduction, Thịnh said. — VNS
