HCM CITY — Vietnamese violinist Bùi Công Duy and American trio FUGU will perform the Việt Nam–US Friendship Concert in HCM City on Monday (Aug 29).
They will collaborate with the HCM City Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera’s orchestra to present works by Pachelbel, Bach and Beethoven.
The concert will open with the orchestra performing Pachelbel’s Canon in D Major under the baton of Trần Vương Thạch, director of the HBSO.
The show will be followed by Bach’s Concerto for oboe and violin (or two violins) in C Minor by Duy and violinist Lorenz Gamma of FUGU.
Duy, 35, who began playing the violin at the age of four under the instruction of his father and violinist Prof Bùi Công Thành, is a graduate of the Tchaikovsky National Music College in Moscow.
He has won top prizes at international competitions, including the first prize and golden medal in the International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians in Saint Petersburg, Russia, in 1997.
He has performed in many countries like Germany, Italy, and Norway. He now teaches at the Việt Nam National Academy of Music.
The evening will end with Beethoven’s Triple Concert in C Major played by FUGU, consisting of Gamma, pianist Ming Tsu and cellist Joon Sung Jun.
The band’s members teach at the California Institute of Arts, Pomona College, and the California State University in Northridge and in Long Beach, the US.
They have performed at prestigious venues across Asia, Europe and the US, and recorded for labels like Cambria Records, Centaur Records, and Cuneiform Records.
The band recently recorded its first trio project with works by British composer Rebecca Clarke, Los Angeles-born Maria Newman and Uruguayan-American Miguel del Aguila. This recording is due to be released this year.
