HÀ NỘI — Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc sent a congratulatory letter to the Vietnamese U23 team.

The team earned a slot to compete in the quarterfinals of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U23 Championship finals in China on January 17.

“I am very happy to receive the news that Việt Nam have qualified for the AFC event’s quarter-finals for the first time. The team’s performance has brought about a sense of pride for the country and fans. It showed the energy and strong will of Vietnamese youth,” said Phúc.

“On behalf of the Government, I send our congratulations and praise to the whole team, especially South Korean head coach Park Hang-seo. I wish the team continue proving their ability and raise solidarity and discipline to gain more achievements,” Phúc added.

Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyễn Ngọc Thiện also sent a congratulatory letter to the U23 squad.

Việt Nam tied goalless with Syria in the last Group D match to qualify for the next phase for the first time in the history of Vietnamese football.

Earlier, the squad lost to South Korea 1-2 and beat Australia 1-0. With four points after three games, Việt Nam ranked second after South Korea and became one of the eight strongest teams in the continental competition.

In the last-eight round, Việt Nam will face Group C leader Iraq on January 20. — VNS
