VN fencers to compete at South Korean Grand Prix

Five Vietnamese athletes will take part in the SK Telecom Fencing Grand Prix men’s and women’s sabre in Seoul, South Korea, on March 31-April 1.

HÀ NỘI — Five Vietnamese athletes will take part in the SK Telecom Fencing Grand Prix men’s and women’s sabre in Seoul, South Korea from March 31-April 1.

Tô Đức Anh, Nguyễn Xuân Lợi, Vũ Văn Hùng and Vũ Thành An will compete in the men’s event, which will consist of 132 fencers. Meanwhile Bùi Thu Hà--the only Vietnamese female competitor--will take on 111 rivals.

Many of the world’s top fencers have registered to compete in the Grand Prix.

The men’s side will see world No 1 Kim Jung-hwan of the hosts, world No 2 Aron Szilagyi of Hungary and world No 3 Vincent Anstett of France.

In the women’s side, the top competitors are Russian world No 1 Yana Egorian, No 1, French world No 2 Manon Brunet and Hungarian world No 3 Anna Marton.

Among Vietnamese, An is ranked highest: he is the world No 25 and competed at last year’s Rio Olympics.

Athletes will take part in five qualification matches to qualify for the main round. — VNS
