LÀO CAI — A man has died after his house was swept away by a landslide caused by heavy rain in Sa Pa.
Phàn Quẩy Vầy, 27, was asleep in his home in Bản Hồ Commune when the building was hit by the landslide around 3.30am.
According to the disaster prevention committee in Lào Cai, damage caused by the weather cost in the region of VNĐ5 billion (US$215,400).
Around 40 houses, three schools and three irrigation works were damaged, more than 35ha of rice fields were flooded and power lines broken.
Due to flash floods triggered by prolonged torrential rain, many roads were closed.
In many places, mud and soil spilled over all the road surface, making difficulty to travel.
Highways 4D and 279 were seriously damaged by the floods.
Thẳm Dương Commune in Văn Bàn District suffered heavy losses and A Mú Sung Commune in Bát Xát District also closed roads.
Evacuation plans are being put in place to help residents move to safer areas. — VNS
