HÀ NỘI — The Hà Nội People's Committee on Wednesday approved a feasibility study for constructing the Vĩnh Tuy Bridge 2 spanning the Hồng (Red) River in Hà Nội.

Building the Vĩnh Tuy Bridge aims to complete the entire Belt Road No 2 of the capital city and promote links between the two banks of the river, as well as connect the city centre with the city’s north and northeast, a representative of the city's Project Management Board for Traffic Works Construction and Investment, the project investor, said.

"The project will create favourable conditions for socio-economic development for two districts of the city including Long Biên and Hai Bà Trưng and meet increasing transport demand and create a premise to form urban areas in the north of the city,” said the investor.

Construction on the reinforced concrete bridge will cover nearly 3.5km.

The bridge with total investment of VNĐ2.5 trillion (US$107.5 million) sourced from the city's budget is expected to be completed in 2022.

Elevated roads of the Belt Road No 2 route will also be completed soon, according to the project director of the elevated roads, Trần Văn Giầu.

"The project has been completed ahead of schedule. The elevated road from Ngã Tư Vọng to Ngã Tư Sở will be completed by the end of July. Other sections of the route have also entered the final phase and are expected to open for traffic before October," Giầu told Kinh Tế & Đô Thị (Economy and Urban Affairs) newspaper.

Phan Trường Thành, master of urban management, said the completion of the elevated route from Vĩnh Tuy Bridge to Ngã Tư Sở wil help ease congestion on Belt Road No 2.

"Moreover, Belt Road 2 also connects with highways No 6, No1 and No5, strengthening Hà Nội's trade capacity with other provinces and cities and forming new urban areas in the north of the capital," Thành said.  VNS
