NGHỆ AN — The Northern Airports Authority temporarily closed Vinh Airport in Nghệ An central province from on Monday to fix cracks in the runway.

The incident was reported to the Civil Aviation Authority of Việt Nam.

At present, the Airports Corporation of Việt Nam (ACV) is coordinating with agencies and the Vinh International Airport to come up with a solution.

The airport is expected to be closed for at least a day while repairs are carried out.

On Monday morning, a number of flights to the Vinh Airport were diverted to Thanh Hóa Airport.

A representative from the ACV said that on Monday morning, the runway at the Vinh Airport encountered a problem when the asphalt surface peeled and cracked, causing many flights to change schedules or cancel.

By 11am, flights to and from the airport could not take off or land.

The runway at the Vinh Airport has been used since the end of 2003. Nghệ An Province has seen prolonged hot weather and continuous rain in recent days, which may be the cause of the incident. — VNS
