HÀ NỘI — The United States should support accelerated trade ties with Việt Nam, improve its maritime police capacity, and increase co-operation in search and rescue and natural disaster relief, National Assembly Vice Chairman Đỗ Bá Tỵ told a visiting congressional delegation on Thursday.

Tỵ greeted a delegation from the Armed Service Committee of the US House of Representatives, led by Michael Dennis Rogers, chairman of the Sub-Committee on Strategic Forces, in Hà Nội, saying the visit offers an opportunity for frank discussion on issues of mutual concern to promote co-operation.

Việt Nam wants to bolster and deepen the comprehensive partnership with the US in a practical and efficient way so both can do more for peace, stability, co-operation and prosperity in the region and the world, he said.

He praised the activities undertaken by the US Congress and administration in addressing the consequences of the war in Việt Nam, and expressed his hope that the efforts would continue.

He also suggested the two countries plan exchange programmes for legislators to exchange experience.

Rogers affirmed that the US sees Việt Nam as a close friend and a reliable partner in the region and the world.

He pledged to continue supporting the promotion of Việt Nam-US co-operation in a more productive manner. — VNS
