HÀ NỘI The Vincom Center for Contemporary Art (VCCA) on Saturday will host a talk with musician Ngô Hồng Quang, who aims to honour the values of Vietnamese music through contemporary work.

His music has been created based on traditional Vietnamese elements. He sings and plays several traditional Vietnamese music instruments, and his compositions combine traditional and contemporary elements.

Entitled Giấc Mơ Trên Lưng (A Dream on His Back), the talk will offer audience chance to interact with the artist and to learn about his career, his viewpoints on art, and his own style.

The event will also feature a performance featuring Quang’s latest compositions. The performance will also feature guest artists from Đàn Đó group – a contemporary music band dedicated to ethnic minority culture in Việt Nam.

A graduate of the National Academy of Music, focusing on the Vietnamese bowed string instrument đàn nhị, Quang pursued a master's in contemporary composing at the Royal Conservatory of Den Haag in the Netherlands. The artist, who can sing and play several traditional Vietnamese music instruments, has created compositions that combine traditional and contemporary elements to perform around the world.

In 2018, he released album Nam Nhi (Being a Man) which is a ‘marriage’ between the Vietnamese UNESCO heritage quan họ (love duet) folk songs and the Western string quintet. In 2019 he released the album Nhìn Lại (Looking Back), which features music by Quang while the lyrics were based on poems by Prof Phan Lê Hà – a lecturer in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The event will take place from 7.30pm until 9pm. VCCA is at R3 – B1, Vincom Megamall Royal City, 72A Nguyễn Trãi Road, Thanh Xuân District. VNS
