HCM CITY — The Hà Nội zoo, also known as Thủ Lệ Zoo, reopened on May 4, following the country’s easing of social distancing measures, but it has yet to attract big crowds.

The zoo is located just about 5km from Hà Nội central, near Kim Mã Street in Ba Đình District. Because of the impact of COVID-19, the number of visitors dropped 80-90 percent over the same period last year.

To promote the zoo, the ticket price has fallen from VNĐ20,000 to VNĐ10,000 (US$0.8 to 0.4). The zoo’s elephants, tigers, lions, monkeys and apes attract the most visitors.

Hà Nội Zoo also has two lions. The first, named Nam, arrived in 2014 from South Africa. Now, Nam weighs nearly 200kg and has produced one cub named Tram.
