HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam topped the medal tally at the Southeast Asian wrestling championship which wrapped up in the northern province of Bắc Ninh on November 25.

The team bagged 24 gold medals in all 24 categories in folk wrestling, women’s freestyle wrestling and men’s freestyle wrestling.

“We sent the best weightlifters to the event and played with fair-play spirit,” said Nguyễn Thế Long, head of weightlifting section of the National Sports Administration.

Some 125 athletes performed at the championship, which opened on November 23. They came from Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Việt Nam.

The three-day tournament aimed to promote wrestling in the locality, Việt Nam and abroad as well as tighten solidarity among ASEAN member states, helping build a peaceful and prosperous bloc.

At the same event held last year, Việt Nam sent 15 players and all of them gained gold medals. — VNS
