HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam’s women weightlifters earned a slot in the 2018 Youth Olympics thanks to their performance in the 2017 IWF Youth World Championships, which concluded in Thailand yesterday.

The women’s team won 71 points and ranks between No 8 and No 17. Teams in these slots are allowed to send one athlete each to next year’s Olympics in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Lưu Thị Chúc My made a strong contribution to the ranking when she grabbed a bronze medal in the women’s 48kg snatch event,

The men’s squad did not qualify with only 51 points, though Lê Nguyễn Quốc Bảo took one gold, one silver and one bronze in the 50kg class. His teammates’ performances were not good enough to collect enough points.

The men’s team, however, still has the opportunity to win berths in the 2017 Asian Junior and Youth Championships, to be held in July in Nepal. — VNS
