HÀ NỘI — Top Vietnamese badminton player Nguyễn Tiến Minh withdrew from the YONEX US Open on Tuesday.

Olympian Minh, the No 7 seed, met David Obernosterer of Austria in the first round as scheduled. But he asked event organizers for permission to withdraw from the game, due to weakness.

Vietnamese players Vũ Thị Trang and Dương Bảo Đức will face Elisabeth Baldauf and Obernosterer of Austria, and Đỗ Tuấn Đức and Phạm Như Thảo will face Abhishek Ahlawat and Jing Yu Hong of the US in the first round of the mixed doubles event. Trang will also play the No 6 seed Iris Wang of the hosts in the women’s singles event.

The HCM City-born player Minh also withdrew from the Canada Open earlier, even though he was the No 5 seed. — VNS
