Mai finishes third in Asian weightlifting champs

HÀ NỘI — The Vietnamese female weightlifting team are likely to earn a spot at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.

The team were leading the women’s board at the Asian Weightlifting Championship in Uzbekistan, a qualification event for the Olympic Games.

Nguyễn Thị Tuyết Mai on Wednesday bagged two bronze medals at the sporting event.

Mai, in the women’s 63kg category, lifted 120kg in the clean and jerk event and took her first bronze.

Mai failed to enter the top three in the snatch with only 91kg but she went on to take the second bronze in the total with her combined result of 211kg.

Earlier, Vương Thị Huyền also brought home a silver medal in the snatch lift category of the women’s 48kg event.

Việt Nam topped the board with 107 points, followed by India with 97 points, Kyrgyzstan with 76 points, Iraq (75 points) and Uzbekistan (71 points).

According to the rules of the International Weightlifting Federation, the six top teams in the women’s board will qualify for Brazil. — VNS
