NGHỆ AN — Recent heavy rains and floods have seriously damaged National Highway No 16 in the central province of Nghệ An, leading to a "red alert" situation.

The flooding has caused landslides and subsidence on several parts of the route, particularly the section that connects the two districts of Kỳ Sơn and Quế Phong, endangering vehicles travelling on the main route linking the province’s border districts.

The route’s section from Km 385 to Km 387, passing through Kỳ Sơn District’s Huồi Tụ Commune, has seen many landslides, which have encroached upon the road.

Thousands of rocks have fallen onto the road, posing a serious threat to passengers and vehicles.

The damaged areas have been repaired, but the risk of further landslides is significant, Dân Trí e-newspaper reported.

Thousands of households may be isolated if this route is damaged continuously, it said.

Warning signs have been installed to alert travellers and vehicles.

The local authority is collaborating with other functional forces to find solutions to repair the damaged areas. — VNS
