HÀ NỘI – An online football betting and gambling ring was busted on Wednesday afternoon by the capital city’s police in Hoàng Mai District.
The betting and gambling money seized by the police was worth VNĐ6 billion (roughly US$280,000).
The ring was allegedly led by Nguyễn Trọng Tuyển, 29, who lived in Thanh Oai District.
The police also arrested seven other people suspected of involvement in the racket.
Since the early days of the 2016 European Soccer Championship, the police had received reports of some men organising football betting involving a large amount of money.
The initial investigation had found that Tuyển led the betting ring.
After spending a long time monitoring Tuyển’s activities, five days ago, the police paid a surprise visit to Tuyển’s house.
Tuyển was unable to show his identity card or any personal papers. Upon checking his mobile phone, the police found several SMSs with content related to soccer betting.
Tuyển admitted to his betting activities.
He said, earlier this month, he called Kiều Đình Dương, 29, living in Thanh Oai District, to ask him to set up three accounts on a soccer betting website. He kept one for himself and transferred the other two to Nguyễn Đình Hà, 42, in Hoàng Mai District, and a man named Trọng, who was not identified.
Besides Tuyển, Dương and Hà, the police also detained another man named Ngô Văn Uyên, born in 1992 and living in Hoàng Mai District, who was also part of the online betting racket.
The case is under further investigation. – VNS
