HCM CITY — Trade unions in HCM City need to reform their operations and activities to respond to labour market transformation, a shift in the economic growth model and deep international integration, said Nguyễn Văn Nên, secretary of HCM City Party Committee.
Trade unions affirmed their role of representing and protecting the legitimate rights and interests of unionists and workers and promoting collective bargaining and workplace cooperation, he said at the Congress of the HCM City Labour Federation for the 2023-2028 tenure that wrapped up on September 24.
Digitisation and AI are having a profound impact on labour markets, according to the official.
Application of science, technology, and innovation, and development of a green and circular economy are new engines that contributed to the country’s economic growth.
In response to these changes, trade unions need to be well prepared to deal with challenges in trade union activities and labour movements, and adapt to the shift in economic growth model and deep international integration.
It also needs to reform educational activities to increase legal awareness and social responsibility among trade unionists and workers.
Nguyễn Đình Khang, president of the Việt Nam General Confederation of Labour, said the labour workforce in the city would continue to grow in the upcoming years, posing many challenges for trade unions in the city.
Trade unions at different levels were required to pay greater attention to ensuring the legitimate rights and interests of workers, he said.
The city had taken a lead in implementing innovative approaches and policies to support trade unionists and labourers, particularly disadvantaged labourers, over the years, he added.
More than 500 delegates who represented more than 1.3 million trade unionists attended the three-day Congress of the HCM City Labour Federation for the 2023-2028 tenure. —VNS
