HÀ NỘI – A large number of fish have been found dead in Linh Đàm Lake in Hà Nội’s Hoàng Mai District, with locals claiming polluted water was the main reason.

The fish began dying at about 8pm last night. Thousands of fish, including tench, carp and plaice, weighing 5-6kg each, were found dead, stretching along a km-long lake dyke area. Many of the fish had been decomposed badly, exuding a bad odour.

The number of dead fish continued to increase over the next few hours.

Trần Đăng Giang, a resident in Hoàng Mai District’s Hoàng Liệt Ward, said this was the first time he had seen such a large number of dead fish in the lake during his two years living in the area.

The smell was so horrible that he and his wife had to halt their walking routine around the lake every night.

A group of seven people used nets and baskets to collect the dead fish. They said they were hired to collect the fish to make fertiliser.

Local police have inspected the site and reported the incident to the city’s People’s Committee for a solution.

This is the second time fish have died en mass in Linh Đàm Lake. Previously, in March 2009, nearly five tonnes of dead fish were found in the north of the lake. – VNS
