US naval ships’ visit to Việt Nam helps promote bilateral ties

HÀ NỘI — The visit of US Navy aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) and guided-missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill (CG52) to Đà Nẵng contributes to the development of the relations between Việt Nam and the US, according to spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry Lê Thị Thu Hằng.

She was speaking during the regular press conference of the ministry in Hà Nội on Thursday in reply to reporters’ queries about the purpose and significance of the visit.

Hằng said the US naval ships are visiting Tiên Sa Port, Đà Nẵng, from Thursday to next Monday, as part of the activities to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Việt Nam-US diplomatic ties.

The visit helps promote bilateral relations in line with the framework of the comprehensive partnership as well as contributing to maintaining peace, stability, security and co-operation in the region, she added.

During the visit, US sailors will take part in a welcome ceremony, a joint press conference, a courtesy visit to municipal leaders as well as community and professional exchanges.

Relating to the ASEAN-US Summit, the spokesperson said the event is not taking place in the immediate future due to the outbreak of COVID-19. — VNS
