THÁI NGUYÊN — The northern province of Thái Nguyên’s People’s Committee on Thursday approved a plan to fix the main dam on Núi Cốc Lake with total investment of VNĐ51.4 billion (US$2.3 million) from the provincial budget.

Approval is based on the committee’s inspection of the dam’s situation on the ground.

Under the plan, prepared by the Việt Nam Hydraulic Engineering Consultants Corporation (HEC), the dam will undergo water permeability prevention, repairs on its roof and be installed with rain measuring equipment.

At a recent scientific conference on repairing the dam, Đoàn Văn Tuấn, vice chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, asked the HEC to collect all ideas and initiatives from scientists and experts on the dam’s water permeability condition to complete its plan on repairing the dam.

Repairs must be completed before the end of next month.

The latest inspection of the deteriorated condition of the dam on Núi Cốc Lake showed that water permeability in the dam exceeded the regulated level by three to six times. The dam, therefore, faced the risk of erosion. Equipment to check permeability status did not work. Moreover, drainage ditches were damaged. — VNS
