KHÁNH HÒA – The central coastal Khánh Hòa Province’s People’s Committee plans to shut down floating restaurants after one restaurant collapsed, killing two people in Vĩnh Hy Bay in the nearby Ninh Thuận Province earlier this week.

The accident in Vĩnh Hy Bay revealed the hidden danger of the unlicensed floating restaurants in tourist places.

Huỳnh Ngọc Bông, the committee’ chief official, said the provincial authority had asked relevant offices to inspect and check the safety of the restaurants and to report to the committee by July 31.

There are several floating restaurants in Nha Trang and Cam Ranh bays, which are popular tourist destinations.

“They are called ‘restaurants’, but in reality, they are simple, make-shift rafts,” Đinh Vĩnh Tiền, deputy head of Nha Trang Bay management board, said.

“The quality and safety of the restaurants have not been certified and licensed by any authorised agency,” he said.

Many restaurants were set up by upgrading fish breeding rafts.
