LÀO CAI — The three-day Culture, Sports and Tourism Festival of the ethnic minorities of northwestern Việt Nam ended yesterday in Lào Cai Province.

Themed “Northwestern ethnic minorities – unity and development towards National Tourism Year 2017,” the festival featured nearly hundred cultural and sports events, which included art performances introducing the cultures of different ethnic groups, a fireworks show, art photo exhibitions showcasing northwestern people and the region’s development and integration process, fashion show of the northwest’s traditional costumes and booths promoting the cultural and tourism products of the region.

The northwestern region has a unique cultural identity and great tourism potential. It is essential to preserve and promote the diversity of different cultures of the ethnic groups, according to Nguyễn Văn Bình, head of the Northwest Steering Committee.

The region needs to encourage locals to engage in cultural activities, combining effective preservation with sustainable tourism and economic development, Bình said.

The event attracted the participation of several artists, actors and athletes from the eight northwestern provinces of Hòa Bình, Sơn La, Điện Biên and Lai Châu, as well as Lào Cai, Yên Bái, Phú Thọ and Hà Giang.
