KIÊN GIANG — Two sea turtles have been released to their natural habitat after being caught by fishermen in the southern province of Kiên Giang, the Economic Department of Hà Tiên Town People’s Committee announced early this week.

Local authorities had called on fishermen and businesses to join in releasing any captive turtles to regenerate marine resources. The two sea turtles, each weighing about 8kg, were caught by a fishing boat.

Sea turtles (superfamily Chelonioidea), sometimes called marine turtles, are reptiles of the order Testudines. The seven extant species of sea turtles are: the green, loggerhead, Kemp’s ridley, olive ridley, hawksbill, flatback, and leatherback. All of them are in danger of extinction, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. — VNS
