VĨNH LONG — The Cửu Long University held a ceremony on Thursday to announce the Prime Minister’s decision to shift the university to private status, the first of its kind in the Mekong Delta.

At the ceremony, a representative of Vĩnh Long People’s Committee also announced the new rector for Cửu Long University for the 2018-23 term and the university’s 10-member board of directors.

Speaking at the ceremony, Trần Văn Rón, the provincial party secretary, asked the university’s board of directors and administrators to further develop teacher and staff training and quality.

Prof Lương Minh Cừ, rector of the university, said the school, set up in 2000, was the first university in Vĩnh Long Province and is now the first private university in the Mekong (Cửu Long) Delta.

After 19 years of operation, the university has trained more than 20,000 bachelor’s and 4,000 master’s degree students.

The university offers 26 majors and four master’s level majors, and is conducting professorial training for the business administration major.

In addition, the university has worked with universities both locally and abroad on the use of research and application of new technologies.

In the future, the university will offer more majors and become a centre of application and new technologies. — VNS
