HA NOI — HCM City's Nguyen Thi Thanh Thu clocked a time of two minutes 49.44 seconds to win gold and set a new record in the girls' 200m freestyle event at the National Youth Swimming Championships in Da Nang yesterday.
The 10-year-old shaved 8.54sec off the old record set last year by Ngo Thu Ha from Quang Ninh.
Tran Thi Hong Cam from Long An finished the race in second place with a time of 2min 32.35sec while Phan Hong Khanh Uyen from HCM City finished third in 2min 32.62sec.
The gold kept HCM City on top of the tally with 29 gold, 35 silver and 31 bronze medals, leaving the Military team in second place and Long An in third.
Yesterday's competition saw Nguyen Thi Ngoc Bich from Long An break her own record in the girls' 1,500m with a time of 18min 43.08sec.
Ho Cong Minh Nguyet from HCM City finished second in 19min 29.64sec while Truong Thi Kieu from the Army Team came third with a time of 19min 31.30sec.
HCM City's boys dominated the 400m freestyle relay in a time of 3:53.40, finishing ahead of Da Nang in second and Binh Dinh in third place.
After four days, 22 records had been shattered, Vo Hoai Han from Can Tho breaking four records while HCM City's Nguyen Bui Thanh Khoi set three new ones.
The five-day championship is set to draw to a close today. — VNS
