Youngsters take a deep breath, shatter four records in one day

HA NOI — Nguyen Trong Quan of Ha Noi won gold medal and set a new record in the boys' 100m surface (diving with a snorkel) with a time of 38.64 seconds at the National Youth Finswimming Championship in Da Nang yesterday.

Quan, 17, surpassed the old record of 39.62sec set by Tran Bao Thu of Tay Ninh four years ago.

In the 800m event, Nguyen Hoan Hao,17, from Quang Binh also broke the second record of the opening day when he clocked a time in 6min 57.07sec and beat the old record of 7:00.18.

Long An team, including Huynh Ngoc Chau, Vo Lam Mong Thanh, Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan and Nguyen Hong Thuy, finished first in the girls' 400m relay in 3min 39.97sec, shaving 15.94sec off the old record (3min 39.97sec).

HCM City team also marked their record in the day after four boys, Tran Duy Nhat, Tran Dung Quoc Viet, Do Dinh Toan and Ngo Phuc Sang took a time of 3min 18.49sec in the boys' 400m relay (the old record is 3min 23.63sec).

Da Nang's Dang Minh Hieu swam first in the boys' 800m immersion (diving with an air tank) with a time of 6min 40.56sec.

His gold medal took Da Nang on top of medal tally with five golds, three silvers and two bronzes after the first day.

The hosts are followed by Ha Noi and HCM City.

The finswimming championship will close on Monday. — VNS
