Chess masters struggle in Asian championships

HA NOI (VNS) — International Grandmaster Le Quang Liem suffered a second unexpected draw in the Asian Continental Chess Championship's open group in the United Arab Emirates on August 4.

Liem, the number one seed, and Chinese grandmaster (GM) Gao Rui drew their third-round match.

Liem has only two points after three games and is ranked 26th.

Teammate and number two seed Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son and international master Wang Yiye, also from China, drew their game.

GM Son was ranked 26th with two points.

GM Nguyen Duc Hoa and China's Xu Xiangyu drew their game, while GM Nguyen Huynh Minh Huy lost to FIDE master Saeed Ishaq of the host country.

In the fourth round, Liem will play Indian GM Kunte Abhijit, while Son will meet GM Rahman Ziaur of Bangladesh. Hoa will face Iran's Maghsoodloo Parham and Huy will play Saiyn Zhanat of Kazakhstan.

Among women, Nguyen Thi Thanh An was the only Vietnamese winner. She beat Faqeeh Aseel JM of Palestine. An is ranked 18th, the best among Vietnamese female masters, with two points after three games.

She will next play Wang Jue of China.

In other games, Nguyen Thi Mai Hung and Chinese Zhai Mo drew their game, Pham Le Thao Nguyen lost to Pratyusha Bodda of India and Le Kieu Thien Kim was defeated by China's Hong Xing.  — VNS
