HCM CITY — Vietnamese GM Lê Quang Liêm on March 17 won the HD Bank International Open Chess Tournament and with it the US$13,000 cash prize.

In the final round in HCM City on March 17 he beat GM Stanilav Bogdanovich of Ukraine in 79 moves to move to seven points from nine matches.

Bogdanovich, a highly rated player, seemed to be in the driver’s seat until the 30th move when he made a mistake.

At the end of the penultimate round, Liêm had been tied with Chinese players Wei Yi and Bu Xiangzhi on six points though he had trailed them on countback.

But with Wei and Bu drawing their final round match, Liêm went ahead by half a point.

Seven players finished with 6.5 points, including Vietnamese IM Trần Tuấn Minh, and shared the second prize of $6,000.

In the Challengers event, 18-year-old Nguyễn Huỳnh Tuấn Hải finished top with eight points from nine matches. Phạm Minh Hiếu and Women’s FIDE Master Nguyễn Thị Thúy Triển were second and third.

Kazakhstan’s Dinara Saduakassova won the women’s title with 5.5 points.

The tournament had attracted over 230 players from 24 countries, including Argentina, Bulgaria, Egypt, Jamaica, and Venezuela.
