Trâm take lead at Zone 3.3 chess tournament

Hoàng Thị Bảo Trâm remained top in the rankings with five points in the women’s category at the Zone 3-3 Chess Championships yesterday in the Philippines.

HÀ NỘI — Hoàng Thị Bảo Trâm remained top in the rankings with five points in the women’s category at the Zone 3-3 Chess Championships yesterday in the Philippines.

Trâm defeated Indonesian Irine Kharisma Sukandar in the sixth round. She will now face Fronda Jan Jodilyn from the host nation.

Two other Vietnamese representatives Võ Thị Kim Phụng and Lương Phương Hạnh were the runners-up with 4.5 points and four points, respectively.

Phụng bested Gong Qianyun of Singapore, while Hạnh beat her teammate Lê Thanh Tú.

In the seventh round, Phụng will meet Hạnh.

Fourth and fifth position went to Jodilyn of the Philippines and Việt Nam’s Nguyễn Thị Thanh An, also with four points.

In the open category, Yeoh Li Tian of Malaysia topped the rankings with 5.5 points after defeating Dimakiling Oliver of the Philippines in the sixth round.

Tian will meet Megaranto Susanto of Indonesia in the next round.

Second and third place were nabbed by Nguyễn Ngọc Trường Sơn of Việt Nam and Liu Xiangyi of Singapore with 4.5 points each.

In the seventh round, Sơn will battle Xiangyi. — VNS
