HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam’s goalkeeper Trần Nguyên Mạnh has been fined a hefty US$1,000 by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) after he got a red card at the recent ASEAN Football Federation Cup.

Mạnh was sent off in the 75th minute of the semi-final match against Indonesia after he trampled on player Bayu Pradana last month.

Việt Nam lost the match and was eliminated from the tournament.

AFC said it was a non-sporting behaviour.

As a result, Mạnh cannot take part in the 2019 Asian Cup. He will not be attending the national team’s training course to prepare for the competition, which begins in March.

The Việt Nam Football Federation was also fined $38,000 as local fans broke the Indonesian team’s bus window after Việt Nam lost. — VNS
