HA NOI — Nguyen Van Quyet scored twice in a home field nail-biter yesterday to lift Ha Noi T&T to the top of the Super-League's ranking table.

The former champion defeated freshmen Kienlongbank Kien Giang 2-1 in the fourth-round match on home turf where they flashed better skills and experience while receiving great support from their fans in the cold weather.

T&T pushed up their lineup to dominate the field from the beginning and their strikers Ngoc Duy, Sy Cuong and Attram Kwame were given numerous opportunities to score although they failed to net the ball.

After the break, the visitors tried to change the course of the match when coach Lai Hong Van put forward Van Cuong onto the field to strengthen the front line. Kien Giang nearly scored but Khoa Thanh's close shot narrowly missed the post.

Quyet scored his first goal at the 57th minute. Taking the ball from an inaccurate shot by teammate Kwame, the national team member easily tapped it into the far corner as Kien Giang goalie Van Hung failed to react.

Kien Giang scored an equaliser in the last minutes when most people thought T&T had already secured victory when Ganiyu Bolaji Oseni scored after a counter-attack. The Nigerian broke through T&T's defence to defeat keeper Duong Hong Son who, despite great effort, could not block a strong shot to the far corner.

In extra time, all T&T players except for the goalkeeper ran to Kien Giang's side for the last attacks. Quyet completed his double, another close-range shot, two minutes into overtime.

In Da Nang, defending champion Song Lam Nghe An tied 1-1 with host SHB Da Nang despite scoring first. Hector Hughtun Kerin boosted the score to 1-0 early in the second half but Nghe An's Gaston Merlo hit a strong header to level the match 1-1 in the final minute.

In the draw, Da Nang dropped from the top of the leader board to third place with eight points while Nghe An rose from sixth to fifth position, on seven points.

In Binh Duong, host Becamex Binh Duong trounced Ha Noi FC 3-1 while Dong Thap went home with a 3-1 victory over Khatoco Khanh Hoa.

In Saturday matches, Navibank Sai Gon struck hard to beat former champions Hoang Anh Gia Lai 2-0; Ninh Binh gave Thanh Hoa their first loss of the season with a 1-0 win and Sai Gon FC brought a bitter beginning to veteran coach Le Thuy Hai, whose was in his debut match as a manager of Vicem Hai Phong. — VNS
