HA NOI — Nigerian goalkeeper Bassey Akpan has signed a one-year contract with V-League side Hoang Anh Gia Lai.

At the age of 27, Akpan has already made many domestic and international achievements.
In 2001, he represented the Nigerian U-17 squad at the 2001 FIFA U-17 World Championships that took place in Trinidad & Tobago. His team lost in the final, but Akpan was named goalkeeper of the tournament.
In 2009, he was a member of the Nigerian club Bayelsa United that won the Nigeria Premier League championship.
A year later, the 1.86m tall goalie moved to Nigerian club Heartland and helped them finish second in the 2010 African Champions League.
In the 2011 season, Akpan played a total of 30 matches for Heartland in Nigeria's Premier League.
He made his international senior debut on March 3, 2010 as a late substitute in a 5-2 win over Congo. He was also Nigeria's number one goalkeeper during their victory at the 2010 West African Football Union Cup.
The two-time V-League champions have also signed a one-year contract with Korean coach Choi Yoon-gyum. — VNS
