Martial arts event kicks off

Update: August, 05/2010 - 09:20

The third Southeast Asian Pencak Silat Championship officially kicked off in the central province of Thanh Hoa yesterday.

The event attracted nearly 100 martial artists from five regional countries including Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore, East Timor and the hosts Viet Nam. They will compete for 18 weight categories in both performance and combat events.

In 2008, Viet Nam hosted the tournament for the first time in HCM City where the home side topped the event with 13 golds, five silvers and four bronzes.

After the tournament, Viet Nam will take part in the world championship, due to be held in Indonesia in December, with the target of successfully defending their championship title.

Viet Nam to host Beach Games

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism is planning a campaign to rally support for Viet Nam to host the fourth Asian Beach Games in 2016.

The Ministry will tout Viet Nam's favourable conditions – such as attractive venues for competitions, a well-developed hotel system, and suitable administrative headquarters – to the Asian Olympic Committee when it attends the second Asian Beach Games in Muscat, Oman, in early December.

Viet Nam will take part in 10 events at the second Asian Beach Games, including beach volleyball, men's beach football, beach handball, beach sepak takraw, bodybuilding, marathon swimming, triathlon, boat racing, beach kabbadi, and beach wooden ball bowling.

Viet Nam's 3,260km coastline offers many places suitable for beach games, such as Ha Long Bay in Quang Ninh Province, Nha Trang in Khanh Hoa Province, and Da Nang and Mui Ne in Binh Thuan Province.

Plan for pencak-silat tourney

About 300 male and female athletes from 25 provinces and cities will take part in the National Youth Pencak Silat Tournament in HCM City from next Thursday to August 18.

The seven-day tournament will help select the best athletes for the national pencak silat team which will compete later in regional and world tournaments.

The Army team is expected to take the championship title, while the other places should be fiercely contested by the hosts HCM City, Ha Noi, Thanh Hoa, Quang Ninh, Nghe An, An Giang, and Ba Ria-Vung Tau.
