PetroVietnam team compete

The PetroVietnam table tennis team left yesterday for the ASEAN Council on Petroleum (ASCOPE) Games in Singapore from today to next Monday.

The team, who won the men's team gold medal at the International Table Tennis Golden Paddle Tournament last week, will compete with a five-member squad including two-time Olympian Doan Kien Quoc, Ho Ngoc Thuan, Ha Minh Tuan and two Chinese players Kou Lei and Yang Ce.

This will be the first time that the team have taken part in the annual tournament, said the team coach Truong Thoi Nhiem.

Gaston eyes golden boot

Argentinean Gaston Merlo has scored 16 goals for Da Nang and leads the V-League's goal-scoring table, according to the Viet Nam Football Federation.

Breathing behind his neck was Nigerian Anjembe Timothy of Hoa Phat Ha Noi, who netted 13 times in 21 matches.

Brazilian-born striker Kesley Alves of Binh Duong, who won the golden boot award last year, was in a group of five all on11 goals.

The top-flight football championship has five games left.

HCM City win sport games

HCM City bagged 245 golds, 160 silvers and 78 bronzes to win the Sport and Arts Performance for the disabled, which closed in Da Nang City on Sunday.

Ha Noi came in second, while Quang Tri ranked third.

The meet, which drew 830 athletes and artists, was a warm-up for disabled athletes prior to the Asian Para Games kicking off in Guangdong, China this December.

Fans seized for firing flare

Two fans of Hai Phong Cement football club were arrested by Ha Noi Police after firing a flare during a football match at Hang Day Stadium on Sunday.

Over 4,000 supporters from Hai Phong city attended the match between Hai Phong and Hoa Phat Ha Noi on Sunday and police arrested two for lighting a flare.

Last week, Ha Noi People's court sentenced eight Hai Phong fans to jail for their riot after the match between Hai Phong and former The Cong team in Ha Noi last year.

Two weeks ago, Hai Phong had to play in a neutral stadium following their punishment from the Viet Nam Football Federation's Discipline Department as Hai Phong fans lit fires at both home and away ground. — VNS
