Chien biffs to boxing open’s 2nd round

HA NOI — Viet Nam’s finest tasted victory in the qualifying round of the Asian Cadet Boxing Championships and Women’s Open Tournament.

Nguyen Thi Chien beat Hong Kong’s Tse Hei Wah in the women’s 48kg category at Trinh Hoai Duc Sport Hall on Monday.

Earlier, Dinh Thi Phuong Thanh playing in the women’s 60kg class, booking a berth in the second round after defeating Senanayake from Sri Lanka.

Hoang Thi Thom won her first match against Abd Wahad of Singapore in the women’s 46kg pool.

Both Le Hong Nhung and Le Thi Hang lost to rivals from India and Mongolia in 50kg and 52kg classes, respectively.

National member Lo Thi Thuy Nam also failed to advance to the next round in her women’s 46kg category after losing quickly to Hmangte from Indian while Ngo Thi Chung, boxing in the women’s 64kg category, lost to Taiwan’s Hsin Chih.

On the men’s side, Vietnamese Nguyen Manh Huy suffered a similar fate, losing to Kazakhstan in the men’s 54kg class.

Nguyen Minh Hieu is expected to defend his 57kg title won last year, alongside of his 24 Vietnamese teammates.

The tournament attracts about 150 participants competing in 13 weight categories for boys age 15-17 along with a women’s division.

At the last tournament held in Ha Noi, the host country could only secure fourth place with one gold and four bronze medals. — VNS
