HCM CITY — The Ministry of Education and Training will closely monitor admissions by universities and colleges this year, especially new ones that lack facilities, to ensure their intake does not exceed their allotted quota.
Many new universities and colleges have opened in the last few years – taking the total number from 287 in 2008 to 440 this year – and National Assembly deputies said after an inspection last March that many admitted much higher numbers of students than permitted, affecting quality.
It was just for increasing revenues, they said.
In the last academic year, the ministry found 11 universities exceeding the admission quotas allotted to them.
It fined them VND40 million to 60 million (US$2,050-3,075) and prohibited Dong A University of Technology in Bac Ninh Province and Phan Chau Trinh University in Quang Nam Province from admitting students this year.
During the next academic year, admission quotas at universities and colleges are expected to increase by 7 per cent over this year. — VNS
