HÀ NỘI  Two Vietnamese students have won gold medals in the International Chemistry Olympiad (ICO), the Ministry of Education and Training announced this morning.

The gold medals were awarded to Đinh Quang Hiếu, a junior student at the Natural Sciences Gifted High School of the Việt Nam National University, Hà Nội, and senior student Nguyễn Khánh Duy from the Lam Sơn Gifted High School in Thanh Hóa Province.

Hiếu and Duy helped Việt Nam rank in third place alongside Thailand, Singapore, India and Iran based on the number of gold medals won by each country at the ICO.

China ranked first with four golds, followed by Russia, Romania, South Korea and Taiwan, with three per country.

Another 12th grader, Nguyễn Thành Trung from Lê Hồng Phong Gifted High School in Nam Định Province, took home the silver award, becoming the third out of four Vietnamese students taking part in the Olympiad competition to win a medal.

The last student, Phạm Đức Minh, a junior at Hanoi-Amsterdam Gifted High School, was sick on the day of the laboratory practical tests, which seriously affected his scores, according to the General Department of Education Testing and Accreditation.

The 48th ICO was held in Tbilisi, Gruzia, this year, attracting participation from 280 students from 75 countries and territories.  VNS
