HA NOI (VNS) — The education and training ministry will consider introducing lessons about border wars and the country's sovereignty over islands in new textbooks, Deputy Minister Nguyen Vinh Hien has said.
The ministry is collecting the opinion of the public and experts about this plan.
Earlier, many educational experts had said it was necessary to add lessons about the war fought by the Vietnamese people to protect the northern border in 1979 and about Viet Nam's sovereignty over the Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spartly) archipelagos in textbooks.
History teacher at Phan Boi Chau high school in the central Nghe An Province Tran Trung Hieu told online newspaper zing.vn that while current textbooks had lessons about these historical events, the content was outdated.
The new textbooks, to be issued in 2018, should have additional basic knowledge, including about the country's sovereignty over the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos and the 1979 border war, he said.
This would help students better understand the country's history and feel more responsible for its development and security, he said.
Vice-Chairman of the Viet Nam History Science Association Nguyen Quang Ngoc said considering its great significance, the 1979 border war should be mentioned in textbooks.
Historian Duong Trung Quoc told Dan Tri online newspaper that history was objective and it was normal to cover such true historical events.
While waiting for the new textbooks, the ministry encouraged schools and teachers to add these events in history lessons or teach about them via extra-curricular activities, Deputy Minister Hien said. — VNS
