National language society celebrates 70th birthday

HA NOI — Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan called on the whole of society to take responsibility for developing the country’s culture and learning, making the comments at a ceremony to celebrate the 70th anniversary of establishment of the Society for Promotion of the Quoc Ngu (National Script).

Nhan said the task to raise the people’s cultural competence was not the sole responsibility of the educational ministry but of the entire society.

Since early 20th century, the Quoc Ngu script, which had replaced the Han (Chinese) and nom scripts to become the official written Vietnamese script, has evolved. The process to complete the script has seen great contributions by intellectuals and scholars such as Huynh Tinh Cua, Nguyen Van Vinh, Phan Ke Binh, Nguyen Do Muc, Luong Van Can, Nguyen Quyen, and especially Nguyen Van To, the society’s first president.

The ceremony was also a chance to commemorate and review the life and causes of Nguyen Van To.

Nhan said the most important lesson from To’s life and achievements was that he had patriotically and actively popularised the national language to fulfil the task of intellectuals and make a great contribution to the cause of liberation and building of the country.

Nhan said the lesson was still relevant and valuable now. He said, the Ministry of Education and Training had to raise its responsibility and further boost the generalisation of educational to reach the target of universalising junior secondary school in the country by 2010. — VNS
