HÀ NỘI — The Việt Nam Red Cross Society (VNRC) plans to provide at least 1.5 million gifts to the poor, Agent Orange victims, disadvantaged people and those affected by natural disasters in 2018 ahead the traditional Tết (Lunar New Year) festival.

The call is part of VNRC’s annual campaign ‘Tết for the poor and Agent Orange victims 2019,’ that aims to mobilise support from local and international communities to help poor and AO families nationwide.

“We call on local and international organisations, the business community and individuals to help VNRC ensure the poor, Agent Orange victims and disadvantaged people enjoy the Tết holiday,” said VNRC Vice President Trần Thị Hồng An.

An said that the society will set up 26 groups that visit 42 provinces and cities nationwide to provide 100,000 Tết gifts, worth at least VNĐ300,000 (US$14) each, to needy people. The remaining gifts will be provided by provincial and city Red Cross societies.

VNRC will also organise an art performance programme, entitled “Humanitarian Strength 2019 - Tết for the poor and Agent Orange victims,” to call on support from all sources to help needy people, Agent Orange victims and disadvantaged families in mountainous and remote areas, flood and storm-hit regions nationwide.

At the event, VNRC will hold an auction for a football and shirt signed by the players and coaching team of the Việt Nam national football team that recently won the 2018 AFF Suzuki Cup. They are gifts from the Việt Nam national football team to Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc. PM Phúc recently handed over the gifts to VNRC to raise funds.

The programme will be broadcast live at 8pm by Việt Nam Television at the Friendship Cultural Palace in Hà Nội, on January 13.

The society, in collaboration with the National Humanitarian Portal 1400, also launched an SMS campaign to mobilise funding for the campaign. People can support the campaign by texting TET to 1407 by February 14, 2019. Each text message will contribute VNĐ20,000 ($0.85) to the fund. — VNS
