HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam’s first tissue bank was opened at Việt Đức Hospital in Hà Nội yesterday.

The tissue bank will receive, store, transport and provide human tissue to hospitals, research centres and medical training institutes across the country, said Việt Đức Hospital director Trần Thanh Bình.

Bình added that Việt Nam’s tissue bank would also provide, exchange and co-operate with individuals, organisations and other tissue banks around the world for the purpose of medical treatment, training and research.

There are over 300,000 tissue banks in 146 countries all over the world. However, before the opening of the tissue bank at Việt Đức Hospital, Việt Nam had only two labs – in Hà Nội Medical University and Phạm Ngọc Thạch Medical University – specialising in storing human tissue.

“Tissue and human organs donated by brain-dead patients or donated parts of dead people could bring great benefits if they were collected and stored in international-standard conditions,” Bình said. — VNS
